This book completely pulled me in from the first page. The atmosphere is haunting, and the slow-burn mystery kept me turning pages till I realized the birds were singing. Great read and highly recommend for fans of immersive, character-driven fantasy!
The world in this book is so vivid, the detail is rich, and the mystery is all very mysterious. Everything about this book has that simple ‘just how I like it’ feel to it. It has plenty of relatable elements for the younger audience, too, but it didn’t feel like I was disconnected from it either.
I love a little blend of cosmic horror and fantasy. The spirit tree, the mysterious mask, and the creatures lurking in the shadows add layers of intrigue for me. I adore stories like these and I hope Scott Henry continues further into the ‘strange’ and ‘eerie’ direction.
This book reminded me of the best survival video games—waking up somewhere unknown, scavenging for supplies, and slowly uncovering the rules of a strange world. The attention to detail is incredible. Z’s thought process, from rationing food to testing out his bow, makes the survival elements feel realistic. A great read for me.
